Anaeto targets four-gold at Kad’09
Coach Patrick Anaeto, whose hands lie the fortune of Delta state track and field disabled athletes at the 16th National Sports Festival, Kaduna’09 next month has said that lukewarm attitude of the state sports council will rob the state vital medal at the event.
The Algiers 2007 silver medalist who still relishes the state’s second finish at Gateway Games said beyond paying athletes their camp allowances there is need for proper monitoring of the athletes’ training instead of leaving them to themselves.
“If I win four gold medals in the throws I would have been done, the atmosphere now does not give room for high expectations.
“Imagine, barely three weeks to the start of the games we are in open camp in Lagos, nobody seems to be interested in coming down here from the state sports council to monitor the athletes’ training. Leaving the athletes all to themselves will not produce the desire result.
“Athletes’ camp entitlements have been paid, a plus to the state, but at this wee hour of the games, it is wrong to leave athletes to eat, drink, sleep and interact as it pleases them.”
Anaeto who spoke to www.vandykesport.com on Wednesday in Lagos commended the games’ stakeholders for restoring the biennial multi-sport to its original status, said Kaduna will produce better champion than the Gateway games.
“Kaduna is strictly for amateur athletes unlike Gateway that accommodated elite athletes, I think a true champion will emerge this time around,” he said.
