Owoicho sees basketball future for Zone 3
FIBA Africa Zone 3 has been tipped to be a haven for basketball in the nearest future if the current effort by Nigerian Muktar Khaleh- led administration in reviving the slam and dunk game is sustained.
Admitting that the zone has the human but material potentials to be a dominant force in the game of basketball, Alex Owoicho who presently tutor the Chariots told Vandykesport.com in Lagos on Thursday that it is only when the ongoing programs are sustained that member country’s players would command respect among their colleagues in continent.
“FIBA Africa Zone 3 could be a force if there is sustainability of programs. The elimination in Benin Republic was good and more of such programs should be put in place and if such programs are sustained it will be good for the teams and countries in the zone. It will further strengthen the players and give them chance to compete with their colleagues in other zones, Asia and Arabs.”
Owoicho who just came back from Yemen where he tutored Al Wakrak commended the performances of the nation’s campaigners at the ongoing FIBA Africa Zone 3 qualifiers in Lagos, host of the event, Union Bank and Kano Pillars, however warned that the two-some acid test would be at the final of the FIBA Africa Champions Cup competition billed for Tunis, Tunisia next month.
