WHAT EXACTLY DOES THE SENATE COMMITTEE ON SPORTS DO?

The senate committee on sports and especially its Chairman Heineken Lokpobiri is always in the news whenever there is a log jam in Nigerian Sports, and like everyone else, guilty of focussing on Football.
I find it increasingly confusing that the committee has yet to define its role in the Nigerian sports landscape. I believe, they should be concerned with policy matters. We do not have a clearly stated sports policy or government position. We lack appropriate legislation to drive the development of sports.
The annoying part of this rush to the media each time to pass comments is that you can hardly make sense. The sittings, public or secret hearings, probes have mostly yielded predictable outcomes.
I call on the leadership of the National Assembly to search deep into its membership, surely, they will find senators 9and this applies to the House of Representatives as well) who are reasonably knowledgeable enough for healthy debates and hopefully begin to focus on creating the legislation that will position our sport for greater corporate sponsorship and funding, professional management and the recruitment of technocrats and most of all provide checks and balances towards establishing global best practice, probity and accountability.
