Free HIV test for athletes

Athletes and official converging at University of Nigeria, Nsukka later this month for the biennial universities sports fiesta, NUGA UNN 2008 will have the choice of knowing their HIV/AIDS status free and confidentially courtesy of the HIV/AIDS Enlightenment Project.
According to the NUGA UNN 2008 HIV/AIDS project, Dr. Hilary Agbo, the enlightenment campaign wants to cash in on the sporting event which brings together large number of youths to further drive home the message for an HIV-free society.
“We are mainstreaming the HIV/AIDS enlightenment programme, free HIV test and confidential access to the result online.
“The activity is conducted under internationally accepted voluntary and anonymous counseling method.
“Youths are the most vulnerable group, and NUGA UNN provides an opportunity that is one in a life time to mainstream the HIV enlightenment programme.
“For various people converging at a place for the first time there is that urge for frivolous and amorous relationship, so it is good to provide them opportunity to know their HIV status confidentially and free of charge.”
Continuing Agbo said there will be counseling stands and lectures, while the affected persons would be free to contact their office for further directive.
“Yes, there will be lectures, seminars, counseling stands, flyers on preventive methods. UNESCO, NACA, and other UN agencies resource persons will be on ground to offer free counseling on preventive measures.
“However, if a person found out that he/she is affected, he/she is at freedom to contact our office for advise and treatment,” he said.
