Supporters club rescues Nigeria
Except the consolatory supporters club award for national teams won by Nigeria, the country would have been an outsider in the Glo-CAF Awards decided in Lagos Tuesday’s night which saw Togolese and Arsenal striker, Emmanuel Sheyi Adebayor being crowned the Player of the Year. He beats Egypt’s Al- Alhy player Mohamed Aboutrieka and Ghana’s Michael Essien to the title.
Shockingly, Obinna Nsofor who raised the expectations of Nigerians of winning the CAF Young Player Award once won by compatriots – Obafemi Martins, John Obi Mikel and Taiye Taiwo was beaten by Ivorien and Chelsea striker Salomon Kalou.
It was a tale tells for the country in the Inter Club Award for Africa based footballers as Egypt’s Al-Ahly striker Mohammed Aboutrieka overcomes the hurdle mounted by Nigeria’s Enyimba striking sensation Stephen Worgu to clinch the coveted award.
Further exposing the rot that has eaten deep into the nation’s football was the Women Footballer of the Year award where non-Nigerian got enlisted despite dominating the African scene for over decade. The award went to South Africa’s Bayana-Bayana player Alice Mathule.
The coach of the year award was won by the national team coach of Egypt Hassan Shehata, while the club supporters’ award went to Al-Ahly. The Egyptian giant, too, won the club of the year award for winning the CAF Champions League for a record six times. The club notched up three awards.
