South Africa 2010: You can’t do without Kanu - Erico
Former Super Eagles’ goalkeeper trainer, Joe Erico has risen in stout defence of Nwankwo Kanu leading Eagles’ campaign for a berth in the South Africa 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Apparently allaying the fears of many Nigerians that the Atlanta’96 gold medalist may be unfit for the strain and stress of qualifications, the jogo bonito tactician said the gangling striker need not see action 90 minutes to make his kill.
“Kanu may not play from the beginning to the end, he may play 10 minutes in each match, he may not necessarily play 90 minutes to turn it into useful minutes. Honestly, I think he is still relevant to the team’s world cup qualification.”
On the dependability of the Eagles’ squad that played barren draw with the Reggae Boyz of Jamaica withstanding the ruggedness of their African opponents and securing the vital South Africa 2010 FIFA World Cup ticket, the former NEPA tactician who admitted to Vandykesport.com in Lagos that the team need to be beefed up with a few quality players; he however, tipped the Coach Shaibu Amodu’s lads for qualification.
“All the team needs is to work harder, be focused and ready to go. Nothing is wrong with the team, neither do they need to go to sleep that they have done well. I think they need more Grade A matches.
“Our boys are rugged; too, Nigeria is a country to beat. As I am talking to you Mozambique and Kenya are scared and afraid of Nigeria.
“Qualifications are of different stages, different music and at each stage our players will come with a different dance step.
“We will qualify, I am sure of that,” he enthused.
