Utomi cup holds February 15
The maiden Pat Utomi U-17 soccer competition, tagged ‘Pat Utomi Cup 2009’ is scheduled to kick off on February 15 at two centres – TTC Ifako Ijaiye and Olusesan playing ground, Ojota.
The soccer fiesta meant for male youth in Lagos and its environs will see 24 teams vie for the coveted trophy donated by the 2007 general elections presidential candidate.
The distribution of teams showed that Lagos have the largest chunk of 20 teams, Ogun have two teams while Delta and Edo will feature one team each.
The grand finale will come up on March 15 at the turf of University of Lagos Sports Complex.
The chairman, Lagos State Grassroots Soccer Association, Prince Nurudeen Agara while challenging coaches and scouts to use the soccer showdown to fetch talents, said the soccer event will go a long way in fostering national unity among the youths.
“The trophy donated by Utomi will motivate the youths, foster unity and promote healthy rivalry. It will equally afford scouts and coaches the chance to hunt for young legs that will replace old ones in our amateur and professional clubs,” he said.
Agara thanked the erudite professor for bankrolling the competition, while calling on other spirited individual to come and join hands with Utomi to move football forward in the country.
